Wimbledon ban: keep virtue-signalling out of sport
Some of the world's top athletes have just been banned from a top global tournament. They've not been caught doping, cheating or doing anything wrong - they were simply born in the 'wrong' countries. Russian and Belarusian tennis players will be kicked out of Wimbledon this year, apparently with the aim of 'limiting Russia's global influence' in the wake of Putin's invasion. As Mick Hume argues today on spiked, the Wimbledon ban will do nothing to halt the war. But it will punish innocent Russian players for the sins of their government. It is a vindictive form of virtue-signalling that sets a dangerous precedent for sport.
