Leicester and the unravelling of multiculturalism
Can we finally talk about multiculturalism? The violent clashes in Leicester between young Hindu and Pakistani men are the grim consequence of the ideology of multiculturalism. It was sold as a means of promoting harmony and equality. Instead, it has done the opposite. It has encouraged members of minority groups to shun mainstream British society. It has encouraged Muslims to identify with Pakistan and Hindus to identify with India, over and above the nation of which they are citizens. This has inevitably stirred up tensions and violence. It has created divisions where there ought to be none. It is time we challenged this failed ideology head-on.
