FBI investigating 175 Nat'l Institute of Health scientists over funding by China
The FBI is allegedly investigating 175 scientists at the National Institute of Health (NIH) over concerns about their receiving funding from China.
According to a slideshow uncovered from a June 12 virtually-held NIH meeting by their working group on foreign influence on research integrity, the NIH has been exploring concerns about a Chinese talent-scouting program that has seen US taxpayer-funded research swept to China.
The Foreign Thousand Talents Plan is listed in three of the slides, one of which includes a quote from a Senate staff report on "Threats to the US Research Enterprise."
The Thousand Talents Plan is described as headhunting American scientists and having them "sign legally binding contracts with Chinese institutions." It goes on to state that "the contracts can incentivize members to lie on [US] grant applications, set up 'shadow labs' in China ... and, in some cases, transfer U.S. scientists' hard-earned intellectual capital."
